What This Plugin Does

The Add Trees plugin draws a small chart for each individual you select: three generations around them — their parents, their siblings, their partners and their children — with boxes optionally linking to that person’s own page. It saves one chart per person, and can place the chart on the matching page of a website.

  • Chart any number of people in one run, one image each
  • Link each relative’s box to their own website page — see Key Terms below for who qualifies
  • Style the charts to match your website: colours, shapes, fonts and layout
  • Embed the charts into your website pages
  • Keep living or private people off the charts

Links are added only for relatives who are included in the same run. To link everyone, select everyone who has a page on your website.

Key Terms You’ll Need To Know
Term Definition
Focus person The individual a chart is built around; their box is highlighted
Navigation chart A three-generation diagram (parents, siblings, spouses/partners and children), each box a clickable link
SVG file The image format each chart is saved as; it stays sharp at any size and opens in any web browser
Embedding Placing a chart directly on the matching page of your Family Historian website
Theme A named, saved set of chart colours you can reuse
Flag A Family Historian record marker (such as Living or Private)
Two Ways To Work
🌳 Standalone Charts

What it does: Saves one chart image (SVG) per person to a folder

Use when: You want chart images to use anywhere — a document, a slideshow, or on their own

Example: A chart for each direct ancestor, to include in a family history book

→ See Step-by-Step Guide

🌐 Embedded In Your Website

What it does: Places each chart on the matching page of a Family Historian website

Use when: You publish a Family Historian website and want a navigation chart on each person’s page

Example: A “see also” chart on every individual’s page, linking to their close relatives

Common Questions
Q: How many charts does it make?
A: One per individual you select, so select as many as you like. Each is saved as its own SVG file.
Q: Do I need a website?
A: Only for embedding. The standalone SVG files are created whether or not you have a website; embedding adds them to an existing set of HTML files.
Q: Can I keep living people off the chart?
A: Yes — and by default the plugin already does, matching a Family Historian website: people flagged Private are left out, and those flagged Living show basic details only (no dates). You can change this on the Privacy section.
Q: Will it overwrite my website pages?
A: By default, no more than the target container. With the default Placement (“Replace div contents”), the chart replaces the contents of the page’s “See also” box; nothing outside that box changes, and running again simply updates it. If you turn on “Remove a section”, that section’s other content is deleted too, so check your Placement setting before you run.
